2. When does my registration expire?
- Individuals – registration expires at midnight of the taxpayers birthday (please refer to your renewal notice).
3. Is there a penalty if my registration is late?
- Yes. 25% is added to your Tag Fee; 10% is added to your Ad Valorem Tax
4. I’m unable to appear in person to renew my registration, what are my options?
- Return registration renewal by mail.
- Renew online at www.dor.georgia.gov
- A third party may request your registration providing the following documents are presented: (1) Signed notification from the taxpayer. (2) Copy of taxpayer’s driver’s license.
5. I recently married/divorced; how do I change the name on my registration?
- Present the original title (if a lien exist on the vehicle, permission must be granted by the lien holder)
- Present the marriage certificate or divorce decree
6. I purchased a vehicle from a private owner; what must I present to register the vehicle?
- Vehicle year model 1986 or newer: Original Title, Proof of Georgia based insurance (30 Day Binder from insurance carrier), Georgia Driver License or Georgia Identification Card.
- Vehicle year model 1985 or older: Bill of Sale, Proof of Georgia based insurance (30 Day Binder from insurance carrier), Georgia Driver License or Georgia Identification Card.
7. How much should I expect to pay for my initial registration?
- Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) is based on 7% of the vehicle’s value as reported by the Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division.

8. What is the price of a new plate?
- Standard Plate – $20.00 (Included with Registration)
- Specialty Plate – $80.00 (except DNR Wildlife $45.00)
- Prestige Plate – $90.00
9. How much does it cost to replace a lost or stolen plate/decal?
- Replacement Plate or Decal – $8.00
Note: Please obtain an incident report from the Sheriff’s office before requesting a replacement plate or decal.
10. How much does it cost to replace a lost title?
- $8.00
11. I received notification regarding a lapse in insurance coverage, what should I do?
- Restitution can be made at your local tag office.
12. What is the last day I can apply for homestead exemption?
- Although applications may be submitted at any time, the deadline for a current billing year is April 1.
13. Can I make a partial payment of my property taxes?
- Yes, but interest and penalty continue to accrue on unpaid balances.
- If your property is subject to a tax lien sale, contact the tax commissioner before making partial payments.
14. If my property is under appeal, am I required to make payment by the due date?
- Yes. Appeal accounts are billed at 85% of the fair market value and necessary adjustments are made upon final judgment of said appeal.

- You can also pay your taxes by phone. Call toll free 1-844-898-2374. You will be asked to enter your bill number.
- Please note there is a convenience fee plus a transaction fee associated with online transactions.
16. I recently lost my spouse, is there a provision that allows me to abate property taxes?
- Yes. You can petition for Year’s Support by contacting your attorney or probate court.
