VEHICLE REGISTRATION
New residents must purchase a Georgia tag and/or decal within thirty (30) days after residency is established. Visitors who remain in the state for less than ninety (90) days, and out-of-state students are not required to register their vehicles in Georgia as long as they display a valid license plate from their home state, unless they accept employment or engage in any trade, professions, or occupation in the state, or enter his or her children in Georgia public schools. In this case they must purchase a Georgia tag and/or decal within 30 days after entering Georgia.
If you are coming from another state, you must register in person and provide the following:
- Your title or finance papers if the title is held by a lien holder and mailing address of lien holder. The account number is required if there is a lien.
- Your current out-of-state registration.
- Proof of insurance (30-Day Binder or Declaration Page)
- Odometer reading, date of purchase, and number of cylinders.
- For leased vehicles, the name and address of the company owning the vehicle and an original power of attorney.
Initial vehicle registrations are assessed a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). Said tax is based on 7% of vehicle value. When moving from another state, customers are required to pay 3% of the vehicle value.
When moving from one location in Georgia to another it is mandatory that you transfer your tags to the new county within thirty (30) days after you have established your new residency and show your current address on your driver’s license.
Renewals – Georgia law requires that all auto tags be renewed within thirty (30) days of the owner’s birthday. Tags expire at midnight on the birthday of the first person listed on the registration as owner. Renewals after this date will be subject to a 10% penalty on the ad valorem tax and a 25% penalty on the tag fee. Georgia law requires collection of penalties on all late registrations.
Additional fees may affect your registration if your vehicle is classified as an Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV). AFV is defined as a vehicle that operates solely by electricity, natural gas or propane; operates as a bi-fuel or dual fuel using electricity, natural gas or propane.
